CPM D2 is a premium version of traditional D2 tool steel manufactured using Crucible Industries' CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy) process. It combines the excellent wear resistance and edge retention of D2 with improved toughness, finer grain structure, and more consistent performance.

Composition (Approximate)

    •    Carbon: 1.55%

    •    Chromium: 11.5–12%

    •    Vanadium: 0.9%

    •    Molybdenum: 0.8%

    •    Manganese: 0.3%

    •    Silicon: 0.3%

What Makes CPM D2 Different?

Traditional D2 is made by conventional ingot metallurgy, which can produce large carbide clusters throughout the steel. CPM D2 is made by atomizing molten steel into tiny powder particles, then hot isostatically pressing them into solid billets.

The result:

    •    Much finer, evenly distributed carbides

    •    Greater toughness

    •    Better grindability

    •    More consistent heat treatment

    •    Improved edge stability

Performance Characteristics

★★★★★ Edge Retention

    •    Outstanding wear resistance.

    •    Holds a sharp edge significantly longer than steels like 154CM, AUS-8, or 440C.

    •    Excellent for working knives that see heavy cardboard, rope, leather, and wood.

★★★★☆ Toughness

    •    Noticeably tougher than conventional D2.

    •    Better able to resist chipping during hard use.

    •    Not as tough as CPM 3V or MagnaCut, but a meaningful improvement over standard D2.

★★★★☆ Corrosion Resistance

    •    Around 12% chromium places it just below the threshold of a true stainless steel.

    •    Often referred to as "semi-stainless."

    •    Handles normal daily carry well but should be wiped dry after exposure to moisture, blood, saltwater, or acidic materials.

★★★★☆ Ease of Sharpening

    •    Easier to sharpen than many modern "super steels" like S90V or Maxamet.

    •    Diamond stones work exceptionally well.

    •    Takes a very fine, aggressive edge.

Heat Treat Range

Most knife makers harden CPM D2 to:

    •    60–62 HRC

    •    Some custom makers push it to 63 HRC with proper cryogenic treatment.
